Fall Activities in the Philadelphia Area

Scenic fall foliage in the greater Philadelphia area with a winding trail surrounded by colorful autumn trees and a clear blue sky.

It’s officially fall in the Greater Philadelphia region! I don’t know about you, but I love this time of year, from handing out candy on Halloween to Thanksgiving and getting ready for Christmas, there’s just something about the crisp air and leaves on the ground. Philadelphia and its surrounding areas offer an array of activities that capture the essence of fall. Whether you’re a fan of outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, or seasonal treats, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Apple Picking and Pumpkin Patches

Living in South Jersey, there are so many options for fall activities in the greater Philadelphia area. One thing I love is finding a farm to take a hayride to go apple or pumpkin picking. Two farms in South Jersey that I absolutely love are Duffield’s and Johnson’s Corner Farm.

Duffield’s Farm Market

Located in Sewell, NJ , this is one farm I have been going to my whole life. Some of my favorite memories are going here with my Grandparents to get their apple cider donuts. This family farm has been helping make memories for over 60 years with their hayrides, farm stand and petting area. After the fun had here, make sure to stop across the street to get some gelato from Dolce Vita Geletaria.

Johnson’s Corner Farm

If you are in the Medford, NJ area, Johnson’s Corner Farm is a must do. This is where I went apple picking for the first time, and all I can say is there was something for everyone in the family. There was no better way to end the trip then with their apple cider donut mixed with ice cream.

Fall Hikes & Day Trips

Driving to and from college in the fall was a special experience. Watching the leaves change color along the PA Turnpike is something I miss all these years later. If you are like me and prefer looking at the changing leaves through the car, these drives are worth the trip.

Peddler’s Village

Peddler’s Village, located in Lahaska, PA, and an hour drive from Center City, is a perfect day trip. This charming village offers tons of quaint shops, restaurants and even a scarecrow festival. One of my favorite memories was grabbing a hot apple cider and walking around in awe of everything.

Brandywine Valley

Another short trip from Philadelphia, is the Brandywine Valley, home to Longwood Gardens. While Christmas at Longwood will always hold a special place in my heart, fall at Longwood is just as magical. After walking the magical gardens, stop by Chaddsford Winery for a delicious wine tasting.

Valley Forge National Historical Park

If you prefer to look at the fall foliage walking, take a trip to Valley Forge. With miles of trails, this park is perfect for a scenic hike amidst vibrant fall foliage. You can also take a guided tour to learn about the area’s rich history.

All Things Spooky

We can’t forget about fall being spooky season, now can we? As one of the oldest cities in America, Philadelphia is the perfect backdrop haunted attractions and ghost tours.

Eastern State Penitentiary

One of the most haunted attractions in the greater Philadelphia area is the Eastern State Penitentiary. This historic prison in Philadelphia, which once housed Al Capone, transforms into a spooky attraction during the fall, with haunted houses an live performances. Make sure you get your tickets in advance.

Take A Ghost Tour

I will always recommend a ghost tour in Philadelphia as a fall activity, even if you don’t believe in ghosts. There are so many ghost tours available in Philadelphia to choose from, however, no matter which one you choose, you will not be disappointed. Even when the government was shut down, the ghost tour I took was still a fun and educational experience, learning all the history.

Fall in the greater Philadelphia area is a time of vibrant colors, cozy activities, and the supernatural. Whether you’re looking to pick the perfect pumpkin, enjoy a scenic hike, or indulge in all things spooky, there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate the season. So, grab your favorite sweater and start exploring all that Philly has to offer this fall!
