Discovering Love Signs in Virginia: A Journey of Adventure

Virginia is not just for lovers; it’s also for adventurers, explorers, foodies and anyone with a passion for unique experiences. If you’ve ever driven through this picturesque state, you might have noticed giant “LOVE” signs popping up in various locations. These signs aren’t just artistic installations—they’re part of Virginia’s broader campaign to spread a message of love and to celebrate the state’s rich culture and scenic beauty. Let’s embark on a journey to uncover the charm and significance of Virginia’s LOVE signs.

The Origin of the LOVE Signs

The LOVE signs are part of the “Virginia is for Lovers” tourism campaign, which has been a beacon of hospitality since 1969. Initially designed to promote Virginia’s appeal as a romantic destination, the campaign has evolved to embody a broader message of love for family, adventure, music, and the great outdoors. The LOVE signs, introduced as part of the campaign’s 40th anniversary in 2009, have become iconic symbols representing this ethos.

As many times as I had visited the state, I never knew about these Love signs until my best friend introduced me to the one in Manassas in 2016. Ever since then, my husband and I always say whenever we are in Virginia, we have to find a new Love sign to take a picture in front of.

Spreading Love Across the State

Scattered across the state, each LOVE sign is unique, often reflecting the character and heritage of its location. From the coastal towns to the mountainous regions, these signs invite visitors to explore Virginia’s diverse landscapes and communities.

When I visit Virginia, I’m typically always in one region or another, which is helpful to find the LOVE signs. As of July 2024, there are 331 LOVEworks signs scattered throughout 10 regions. To break it down:

  • Central Virginia – 10
  • Blue Ridge Highlands – 48
  • Hampton Roads – 41
  • Northern Virginia – 40
  • Virginia Mountains – 32
  • Shenandoah Valley – 29
  • Heart of Appalachia – 26
  • Southern Virginia – 20
  • Chesapeake Bay – 19
  • Eastern Shore – 5

So far, I have been able to find 23 #LoveVA #LOVEworks signs.
